Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi has condemned an official Department of Homeland Security social media post that depicted a man labeled "Mr. Singh" in a Transformers style deportation graphic, telling him to "get off our roads" and warning him to "self deport or find out."
Krishnamoorthi, who is of Sikh American heritage, said the government should never use its power to demonize people based on their faith, heritage, or identity. He noted that more than 160,000 people in the United States share the surname Singh, and warned that targeting the name fuels xenophobia against an entire community.
The AI generated poster drew sharp backlash from Sikh Coalition, Hindu American Foundation, and other advocacy groups, as well as Democratic leaders including California Governor Gavin Newsom. By Thursday morning, DHS had quietly deleted the post after it had racked up more than 4.2 million views and over a thousand reposts.
Krishnamoorthi said Sikh and South Asian Americans "are as American as anyone," adding that the country should have no room for hate.
