Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan has been named vice chair for parks on the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment and Sports Committee, giving him a national platform to shape urban park policy.
Salwan said he intends to use the role to study best practices from cities across the country and bring fresh ideas, partnerships and funding opportunities back to Fremont. “I want to use this role to learn what other cities are doing well, pursue new partnerships and funding opportunities, and bring those ideas back home,” he said, pointing to Fremont’s parks, trails and open spaces as assets worth building on.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors is a nonpartisan organization representing cities with populations of 30,000 or more, providing a key forum for municipal leaders to exchange strategies and influence federal policy. Salwan’s appointment positions Fremont to have direct input into national conversations on park management and recreation infrastructure.
Salwan, who has spent more than 18 years in Fremont city government, including as councilmember and vice mayor, took office as mayor in December 2024. “When Fremont has a seat at the table, we have an opportunity to bring something back home,” he said.
