Indian American entrepreneur Brij Agrawal and his wife Sunita have donated 5.5 million dollars to St. Luke's Health Sugar Land Hospital, the largest philanthropic gift in the Texas hospital's history, aimed at expanding clinical services and improving healthcare access for underserved communities in the Houston suburb.
The couple, longtime Sugar Land residents who raised their family and built several businesses in the area, directed the funds to strengthen existing clinical programs and help establish a new Primary Care Community Clinic. CommonSpirit Health Philanthropy and St. Luke's Foundation announced the gift, with hospital leaders calling it a transformational moment for the region.
"Brij and Sunita Agrawal's gift is truly unprecedented and will quite literally change the landscape of patient care for the Sugar Land community," said Al Seminsky, associate vice president of philanthropy at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.
Born in Lakhanpur, Chhattisgarh, Brij moved to Houston at the age of 17 in 1979, worked full time while earning a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Houston, and went on to build a successful business career. In recognition of their generosity, the hospital's main patient tower and pavilion will be renamed the Agrawal Family Patient Tower and Pavilion.
