MILAN-CORTINA — Team USA closed the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in stunning fashion, finishing second in the world with a record-breaking 12 gold medals — the most the nation has ever won at a single Winter Olympics.
The dramatic finale came in the men's hockey gold medal game, where Jack Hughes delivered an overtime winner to defeat arch-rival Canada, clinching America's 12th gold and 33rd medal overall. The 33-medal haul narrowly missed the all-time U.S. Winter Olympics record of 34, set in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Norway dominated the Games with an Olympic-record 18 gold medals and 41 total medals — a historic performance unlikely to be matched for generations. The U.S. comfortably outpaced host nation Italy (30 medals) and Germany (26 medals) to secure a clear second-place finish.
It marks America's best Winter Olympics performance since Oslo 1952 — the last time the U.S. held sole second place in both gold medals and total medals.
