Sutter Health and Santa Clara University have announced a new medical school in Silicon Valley, the first to open in the San Francisco Bay Area in more than 100 years.
The Mark and Mary Stevens School of Medicine will be funded in part by a 175 million dollar gift from venture capitalist Mark Stevens and Santa Clara alumna Mary Stevens, the largest donation ever received by either institution. The 82,000 square foot campus, now under construction near Sutter’s East Santa Clara medical complex, is expected to open in three to five years, pending accreditation.
Leaders say the school aims to address California’s physician shortage by training doctors in a human centered model that blends technology, research and clinical care across Sutter’s network. Students will earn a Doctor of Medicine degree from Santa Clara University and complete their clinical training at Sutter hospitals and clinics throughout the region.
