A young bear roaming the UC Davis campus overnight triggered an hours long alert, but the animal left without incident before dawn, university officials said.
The bear was first reported around 10:40 p.m. Thursday near the West Village student housing complex, then spotted on the main campus close to the Segundo and Primero residence halls and the Activities and Recreation Center. UC Davis issued an Aggie Alert warning students and staff to stay indoors while campus police, state wildlife wardens and Yolo County Animal Control searched the area.
The last confirmed sighting came just after midnight, when the bear was seen exiting through the Student Farm on the edge of campus. No injuries or property damage were reported, and the alert was lifted shortly after 5 a.m. Officials believe the visitor was a juvenile black bear likely dispersing to find new territory as spring activity increases in Northern California.
