Seema Patel, chair of the San Mateo Planning Commission, has entered the race for a seat on the San Mateo City Council, bringing years of experience in local planning and civic affairs to her campaign.
Patel has served on the Planning Commission since 2021. She was vice chair from 2023 to 2024 before assuming the role of chair in 2024.
Her candidacy places planning, housing, infrastructure and community development at the centre of the local election conversation. As a Planning Commission leader, Patel has been involved in reviewing development proposals and helping shape decisions affecting San Mateo’s growth and quality of life.
If elected, Patel would join the City Council at a time when Bay Area communities continue to confront housing availability, economic pressures, transportation needs and demands for responsive local governance.
Patel’s campaign is expected to focus on her record in public service and her understanding of the policy issues that directly affect San Mateo residents. Her bid also highlights the growing participation of Indian American leaders in local government across California.
