India’s women’s hockey team ended a 44 year wait for Asian Games gold after defeating China 1 to 0 in a tense final on Friday, October 2, at the Asian Games 2026.
Lalremsiami Hmarzote scored the only goal of the match in the opening quarter, giving India an early lead against the hosts. China responded with sustained attacking pressure, but India’s defence stood firm through the remainder of the contest.
Goalkeeper Savita Punia emerged as one of India’s key performers. The experienced custodian saved a penalty stroke in the second quarter to deny China an equaliser and later made another crucial intervention as the Chinese attack intensified.
India last won women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games in 1982. The victory ends a long wait for the title and underlines the team’s growing strength on the international stage.
The gold medal also secures India a direct qualification berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, providing a major boost to the team’s preparations for the next Olympic cycle.
