Prada Group has formally credited India’s iconic Kolhapuri chappals as the inspiration behind its latest sandal collection and announced a three year artisan training program in India, turning a cultural controversy into a high profile collaboration.

The move follows criticism after Prada’s Spring Summer 2026 menswear show featured sandals resembling Kolhapuri footwear without initially acknowledging their Indian origins. The new collection, titled Made in India x Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals, is now available in 40 Prada stores worldwide and online.

The line is being produced in Maharashtra and Karnataka with local artisans in partnership with Indian leather development bodies, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary luxury design. Prada said the initiative is meant to strengthen artisan livelihoods while giving global visibility to a Geographical Indication tagged Indian craft.

Alongside the launch, the company unveiled a fully funded training program for 180 artisans across eight Kolhapuri producing districts. The first batch of 30 trainees will begin this summer, with instruction in design, digital skills, and market ready production. Selected participants will also have an opportunity to continue training at Prada’s academy in Italy.
