Construction has officially begun on a new cricket stadium at the Fairplex Grounds in Pomona, Los Angeles County, marking a historic milestone as the sport prepares to return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1900.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 22, attended by ICC Chairman Jay Shah, ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta, LA28 Vice President Niccolo Campriani, Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval, Consul General of India in Los Angeles Dr. K J Srinivasa, and Knight Riders Sports CEO Venky Mysore.
Cricket will feature in both men's and women's competitions in the T20 format at the LA28 Olympics, scheduled from July 14 to 30, 2028. The last time cricket appeared at the Olympics was 1900, when Great Britain played France.
"These are very exciting times for the game of cricket as it makes giant strides in establishing itself as a global sport," said Shah, adding the venue would leave a lasting legacy for cricket in the United States.
Before the Olympics, the Fairplex venue will also host Major League Cricket matches, with the Los Angeles Knight Riders scheduled to play three games there from July 1 to 5, 2028, giving American fans an early taste of world class cricket at the new ground.
