Federal and state law enforcement agencies have raided multiple jewellery stores across Georgia, Texas and Florida, dismantling a sprawling $50 million gold bar fraud network that preyed almost exclusively on senior citizens.
Coordinated raids hit Malani Jewelers in Decatur, Georgia, Saima Jewelers and other stores in Richardson, Texas, and Orlando, Florida. Investigators say the criminal network laundered stolen gold by melting it into jewellery, primarily bracelets, before selling the finished pieces to unsuspecting buyers or smuggling them out of the country.
The scam unfolded through email and text messages where fraudsters posed as law enforcement officers, falsely telling victims their bank accounts had been compromised or that they faced legal trouble. Victims were then instructed to withdraw their life savings, buy gold bars and hand them directly to couriers.
The human cost is devastating. The daughter of a retiree in Little Elm, Texas, revealed her father lost $2 million in retirement savings and died last November without recovering a single dollar.
Authorities have made approximately 20 arrests so far. More than 200 victims have been identified, with investigators focused on recovering and returning the stolen funds.
