Harvard University's Department of South Asian Studies has issued a formal apology after posting what it described as an "insensitive image" tied to its Sanskrit programme, triggering sharp criticism from sections of the Hindu community across North America.
In a statement released Friday, the department said it "deeply regrets the posting of an insensitive image in relation to our Sanskrit program." It reaffirmed its commitment to the language, stating it has "a long and celebrated history of teaching Sanskrit" and remains dedicated to the intellectual and cultural tradition it represents.
The department also announced it was reviewing its internal social media processes to prevent similar incidents going forward. In a separate clarification, the department stressed that the controversial post had no connection whatsoever to the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, a distinct Harvard entity.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) welcomed the apology, calling it "one of the rare moments where a university department has formally apologised for their Hinduphobic insensitivity." The group added it was glad to see the department showing respect for "an ancient language that has made a huge impact on civilizations around the world."
