OpenAI has announced a landmark $110 billion funding round, one of the largest in the history of private technology, as the maker of ChatGPT races to scale its artificial intelligence infrastructure at a breathtaking pace.
Amazon leads the round with a $50 billion commitment, beginning with an initial $15 billion and followed by an additional $35 billion contingent on OpenAI meeting specific milestones, including a potential US public offering. Nvidia and SoftBank are each contributing $30 billion to the round.
The deal catapults OpenAI's valuation to $840 billion, a sharp rise from the $500 billion valuation established during a secondary financing event last October. As part of the partnership, Amazon Web Services will serve as the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, the company's new enterprise platform for building and deploying AI agents.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the moment transformative, saying "AI is going to permeate every aspect" of the economy. The company confirmed its partnership with Microsoft remains unchanged, with both firms issuing a joint statement affirming their collaboration stays "strong and central."
