Indian Embassy Issues Emergency Shelter Advisory in Mexico after cartel violence

MEXICO CITY — The Indian Embassy in Mexico has issued an urgent advisory on February 22, urging all Indian nationals across multiple Mexican states to shelter in place amid a wave of retaliatory cartel violence following the killing of feared drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, alias "El Mencho," in a military raid.

The embassy specifically warned Indians in Jalisco — including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara — along with Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León to avoid areas of law enforcement activity, limit movement, and monitor local media for updates. "There are ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity," the embassy stated.

El Mencho's death, a significant blow to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), is widely seen as President Claudia Sheinbaum's response to intense U.S. pressure to crack down on cartels producing and smuggling fentanyl across the border.

Indians in affected areas were advised to call 911 in emergencies, avoid crowds, and keep family informed of their whereabouts.
