Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian, India's former Chief Economic Adviser and current Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, has been named a recipient of the University of Chicago's prestigious Alumni Award for Professional Achievement, one of the university's most coveted distinctions for graduates who have made an exceptional mark in their fields.
Subramanian, a PhD alumnus of the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, served as India's 17th Chief Economic Adviser from 2018 to 2021, the youngest person to hold that office. During his tenure, he authored landmark Economic Surveys, including India's strategic blueprint to become a $5 trillion economy and a post-COVID recovery framework centred on public infrastructure investment.
His contributions were personally recognised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised his "academic brilliance, unique perspectives on economic and policy matters, and reformatory zeal."
The Chicago honour adds to an already distinguished portfolio of recognitions. Subramanian has previously received Distinguished Alumnus awards from both IIT Kanpur and IIM Calcutta. His research spanning banking, corporate governance, and economic growth has been published in the world's leading academic journals.
