Indian American neurologist Dileep R. Yavagal received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting, honoring decades of work that has reshaped stroke treatment across the globe.
The award was presented by the Association of Indian American Neurologists in collaboration with the American Brain Foundation, recognizing his pivotal role in establishing mechanical thrombectomy as a standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke.
Yavagal serves as chief of Interventional Neurology and co-director of Neuroendovascular Surgery at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital. He is also the founder of Mission Thrombectomy, a global initiative now active in more than 90 countries, focused on making advanced stroke care accessible in lower income and resource limited settings.
His contributions to landmark clinical trials, including SWIFT PRIME, helped rewrite global stroke treatment guidelines. Research under his leadership has also exposed critical gaps in rural stroke care within the United States, showing rural patients are far less likely to receive thrombectomy than urban patients.
Born and trained in India, Yavagal completed advanced fellowships at Harvard, Columbia, and UCLA before building one of the most impactful careers in modern neurology. Over his career, he has mentored dozens of neurologists who now lead stroke programs worldwide.
