Tejal Desai, Dean of Engineering at Brown University and one of America's most accomplished biomedical engineers, has been named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the oldest and most prestigious honorary societies in the United States, joining a distinguished class that includes Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, and leaders across science, arts, and public affairs.
Desai, who leads Brown's School of Engineering, is a globally recognised pioneer in biomedical engineering with transformative contributions in drug delivery systems, biomaterials, and tissue engineering. Her research has focused on designing microscale and nanoscale systems to improve how drugs are delivered in the human body, with profound implications for treating chronic diseases including diabetes and cancer.
Her election to the Academy places her among an elite group of thinkers whose work has fundamentally shaped human knowledge and public good. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1780 by John Adams and other founding fathers, elects fewer than 250 new members annually from across disciplines worldwide.
For the Indian American scientific community, Desai's recognition is one more landmark in a generation of immigrant scholars who have risen to lead America's most respected academic institutions. A dean, a researcher, and now an Academy Fellow, Tejal Desai continues to redefine what leadership in American engineering looks like.
