AHMEDABAD, India — In one of the most dramatic matches in T20 World Cup history, South Africa defeated Afghanistan by four runs after two super overs for the first time in tournament history.
The match at Narendra Modi Stadium ended tied at 187, with Afghanistan's Fazalhaq Farooqi run out on the penultimate ball attempting a risky second run. The first super over also finished level at 17-17 after South Africa's Tristan Stubbs smashed a last-ball six off Azmatullah Omarzai.
In the second super over, David Miller's explosive 16 off four balls helped South Africa post 23. Afghanistan's Rahmanullah Gurbaz responded with three consecutive sixes off spinner Keshav Maharaj, but was caught at point with his team falling four runs short.
Gurbaz earlier starred with 84 off 42 balls in Afghanistan's chase of South Africa's 187-6, which featured half-centuries from Quinton de Kock (59) and Ryan Rickelton.
"I've never been so stressed in my life in a cricket game," said South Africa's Lungi Ngidi, who was named player of the match.
The victory keeps South Africa on track for the Super Eight stage alongside New Zealand.
