Indian consulate in LA begins visa and OCI services

The Consulate General of India in Los Angeles officially launched direct visa and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) services on April 6, 2026, offering a significant relief to the Indian diaspora across four western states.

The consulate announced that residents of Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico can now access these services directly at the consulate, ending the need for long-distance travel to other processing centers.

This move builds on a broader push by India to expand its consular footprint across the United States. In December 2025, an Indian Consular Application Center operated by VFS Global opened in downtown Los Angeles at 800 South Figueroa Street, bringing the total number of such centers in the country to 17. The LA center handles passport renewals, visa applications, OCI card processing, renunciation of citizenship, police clearance certificates, and Global Entry Program enrollments.

VFS Global processed nearly 364,000 applications by mid-November 2025, with total volumes expected to approach half a million annually. Extended weekday and weekend hours aim to cut wait times to a few working days, a welcome development for the estimated 5.3 million-strong Indian diaspora in the United States.
