A powerful winter storm is moving across California and bringing heavy snow to many mountain areas.
The biggest snowfall is expected in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Some high areas could get several feet of snow, possibly up to 5–8 feet in total. Lower areas may see less snow or just rain.
Snow will mostly fall in places that are 4,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level or higher.
Travel Warning
Heavy snow and strong winds could make roads slippery and dangerous, especially in mountain passes. Drivers are advised to be careful and check road conditions before traveling.
Why It Matters
The snow will help improve California’s snowpack, which is important for the state’s water supply.
