The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond

Review: 1.5/5

About The Movie:

Across three Indian states, three young women defy family and tradition for love, only to slip into unseen cages of control and silence. What begins as romance and rebellion mutates into manipulation and loss of freedom, until the women strike back, turning captivity into a battlefield for survival.

Critics Review :Story:
The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond revolves around three young women who marry men after being promised love, independence, and a better life. However, once they step into marriage, they find themselves under strict control and facing painful realities they never imagined.

Review:
The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond sticks to its central theme for most of its runtime and hardly takes the narrative forward. The sense of redemption appears only in the final ten minutes, by which point viewers may already feel exhausted. The film addresses the issue of forced conversion of Hindu girls and clearly places the blame on one particular community. Its background score is intense and overpowering, giving the drama an almost apocalyptic feel. At its core, the movie relies more on emotionally charged scenes and lengthy speeches than on a tightly woven storyline. While the first film had some gripping sequences, this sequel feels comparatively weaker and largely predictable, with the ending easy to anticipate.

The plot centres on three women from different parts of India — Surekha (Ulka Gupta), Neha (Aishwarya Ojha), and Divya (Aditi Bhatia). Surekha, from Kochi, comes from a caring family but falls for Salim (Sumit Gahlawat), a married journalist who assures her that he will not pressure her to convert and promises to leave his wife. Neha, a javelin thrower from Gwalior with big ambitions, meets Faizan (Arjan Singh Aujla), who conceals his true identity while offering to help her train with top coaches. Divya, a gifted dancer from Jodhpur who shares bold dance videos online, clashes with her parents over her choices. When she meets Rasheed (Yuktam Khoslla), he promises her freedom after marriage. But soon after tying the knot, all three women are confronted with rigid religious restrictions and the harsh consequences of their decisions.

The film does not present much that feels new or refreshing. The writing appears shallow at times, and the execution leans towards exaggeration. The narrative tone is assertive and leaves little room for nuance. Hindu families are portrayed as affectionate and harmonious, while Muslim households are depicted in darker tones, both visually and emotionally, with even the colour palette reinforcing this contrast. Towards the end, the movie references real-life conversion cases and notes that certain accused individuals were later arrested
