Critics Review
:Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai arrives with plenty of expectations. Not only does it mark Varun Dhawan’s first solo release of 2026, but it is also being viewed as a possible farewell film for veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, the man who helped define Bollywood’s commercial comedy genre.
Staying true to his signature style, David Dhawan delivers a colorful, fast-paced entertainer packed with mistaken identities, over-the-top situations, romance, and a steady stream of punchlines. The film makes no attempt to reinvent comedy and instead embraces the unapologetically loud, mass-market humor that has long been associated with the director’s brand of filmmaking.
Varun Dhawan leads the film with infectious energy and confidence. Comfortable in the comic space, he carries much of the film on his shoulders and succeeds in several laugh-out-loud moments. Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur provide solid support, adding glamour and charm to the narrative, though their characters are not always given enough depth beyond serving the film’s comedic and romantic tracks.
The biggest strength of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is its commitment to entertainment. The film rarely pauses for emotional complexity or realism, choosing instead to focus on delivering crowd-pleasing moments. Fans of classic David Dhawan comedies will likely appreciate the nostalgic flavor and familiar style.
However, the film’s biggest weakness is also its reliance on that same formula. Several jokes feel dated, and some double-meaning humor may not resonate with modern audiences. The screenplay occasionally sacrifices character development and logic in favor of easy laughs, making portions of the film feel repetitive and predictable.
Despite these shortcomings, the film succeeds as a light-hearted commercial entertainer. It knows exactly what it wants to be and never pretends otherwise. While it may not rank among David Dhawan’s finest works, it serves as a reminder of the filmmaker’s enduring ability to create accessible, family-friendly crowd pleasers.
As a farewell outing, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is less about breaking new ground and more about celebrating a style of Bollywood comedy that David Dhawan helped popularize. It may not win over every critic, but it is likely to find appreciation among audiences looking for a fun, uncomplicated theatrical experience.
