Kanwal Rekhi

Kanwal Singh Rekhi has been a transformative figure in the Indian-American business and entrepreneurial ecosystem, dedicating decades to fostering innovation, mentorship, and global connections. As a pioneering entrepreneur, Rekhi became the first Indian-American founder and CEO to take a venture-backed company public on the Nasdaq stock exchange, paving the way for countless others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams in America. A visionary leader, Rekhi co-founded Excelan, a groundbreaking manufacturer of smart Ethernet components, and led the company to its public offering before merging with Novell, where he served as executive vice-president and chief technology officer. Beyond his corporate achievements, Rekhi has been instrumental in shaping Silicon Valley’s startup ecosystem, becoming a full-time angel investor in 1994 and funding over 50 startups, of which 23 he served as a board member. His guidance and strategic investments have resulted in 21 successful exits, including six IPOs, cementing his legacy as a mentor and catalyst for innovation. Rekhi’s impact extends far beyond entrepreneurship. In 1995, he co-founded TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs), a global nonprofit network that provides mentorship, funding, and guidance to Indian-American entrepreneurs. Through TiE, Rekhi has nurtured generations of founders, strengthening the Indian-American presence in the global technology landscape. He also co-founded Inventus Capital Partners, continuing his efforts to back visionary startups and expand the reach of Indian-American entrepreneurship internationally. A committed philanthropist, Rekhi has significantly contributed to education and knowledge in technology. His $5 million donation to Michigan Technological University and $3 million gift to the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay helped establish and advance the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology (KReSIT), inspiring future generations of engineers and innovators. Kanwal Singh Rekhi’s remarkable achievements have earned him widespread recognition, including the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Arthur Young and Venture magazine in 1987, and the Bina Chaudhuri Award for Distinguished Service from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2003.
